Abstract
The use of benzodiazepines has been growing in the world in an alarming way, being one of the most prescribed drugs. However, its abuse can cause significant damage to the individual, the family, the community, in addition to increasing public spending. In this sense, it has been considered as a public health issue. On the other hand, the suicide spectrum, in all its variety and complexity, also causes pain, suffering and expense and, likewise, has been seen as a public health issue. Based on this, this study aims to reflect on the abusive use of benzodiazepines, suicidal ideas and attempts at self-extermination from the reality experienced by health professionals in a small municipality in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, among March 2015 and August 2016.
